Rozie you did the right thing, hands down. I recently caught an epidsode of Oprah and the topic was “What would you do if….” The show was based around another show which is a bunch of actors who pose in certain situations to see what people will do when confronted with things like racism, anger, hatred and violence against women. Interestingly the show found woman more often than men come to the assistance of others in crisis situations, even if they are aprehensive of the circumstances unto which they are entering. Many years ago I assisted at the scene of a serious car accident. Another driver also stopped to help and she helped me with one of the passengers who was bleeding heavily from a deep and long gash across his forehead. Due to the nature of the wound and its location he was gushing blood, a serious amount of blood to be honest. As I was already assisting the man when the other driver arrived I was literally holding the wound together with my hands to ease the bleeding until help arrived. Upon seeing the situation she rushed back to her car and brought with her some bath towels she must of had in her car. I continued to hold his head and she helped by mopping up with her towels. The ambulance arrived, took him and the others and we were left to wait for the police to take our name and details. A few days later she called me, which surprised me because she must have taken note of my number when I was giving it to the police. She then demanded I return her towels to her immediately. I explained I had not taken them they were left as far as I knew in the car in which the accident occured. She became irate and hung up on me. She then called me a few weeks later to demand the name and details of the man we had helped as she wanted to be reimbursed for her towels. I was horrified. I told her she should not have helped if that was her attitude and she ended the call by saying she would “see me in court”. It made me worried for a long time that people are altogether lost on the idea of “help”. Having said that I would stop and render assistance again and I believe what you did was most certainly the correct and proper human thing to do.
