I have just discovered DJ Havana Brown, not like discovered an awesome new musical diversion but discovered that she exists. Apparantly, she is Australia’s number one female DJ, but I’d like to say Australia’s number one Pussycat Doll impersonator who can mix (tbc). I’ve always thought it was tough to make it in the man’s world of DJing, but obviously she took the easy route and dressed like a ho to get there. I’m jealous.
Well, it’s NYE and I was perusing the parties on in Sydney when I came across The Bongo Virus NYE Event “hosted” by Paris Hilton. Havana Brown is one of the DJs playing at the event. I was wondering what all the young folk were doing tonight.
Happy New Year’s Eve – hope it’s it an above average night. How’s this for a theory: If you have average expectations of this night of nights, you will not to be too greatly disappointed.

An owl pin

I’ve always had really weird dreams, but never blogged about them – too personal??? This blog could be made up entirely of my dreams which are always way more exciting/stranger than my real life. In the 90s I used to keep a dream diary, but ended up stopping when I started going out with Dave.
The picture above relates to my dreams last night.
• Looking at thousands of metal pins (gold & silver) that were used to mark the birth of a new child. This is where I saw some pins similar to ones I have (in real life) that I don’t remember where they came from.
• Nazi’s invading my grandparent’s backyard.

The night before’s dream included:
• a secret gelato shop
• a guy from school (who I recently became facebook friends with) who ends up pashing a mean girl from school. I am really annoyed by this because I know he is married.
• a girl from school who was bawling and distraught.
• driving past a group of people wearing matching red jackets

Australia Post Strawberry Hills Business Centre
I received one of those cards from Australia Post saying that they had Registered Post to deliver to me, because I wasn’t home. I needed to pick it up from the Strawberry Hills Business Centre. Is Strawberry Hills even a real suburb, like East Redfern? Luckily I have spare time to go down to the actual post office to pick up mail. The card was received on a Thursday but I couldn’t get to the post office until the following Monday. It was a very warm day mind you, summer is coming. Firstly, I go into the wrong building in the business complex on Cleveland Street, the security guy tells me to go down some stairs into the post office shop, I queue up there and then get told I can’t pick up parcels here, I need to go to the roller door window outside to the right of the main shop. So I queue up at the parcel pick up window and give the postal service worker my card. He looks around for it for a while but he says he can’t find it. “It’s not here.” (Well where the **** is it?). He said sometimes the postman says it’s going to be there but it’s not, it’s gone somewhere else. He suggests it may have gone to the Surry Hills post office. He does give me a customer complaint form and a number to call before I head off to Surry Hills (where I’d just come from). So I have to call Australia Post on my mobile, while standing out the front of Australia Post (nb still very warm). A voice message tells me I am unable to speak to anyone as they are all too busy. I am asked to leave my name, number and a message and someone will call me back between 2:00 and 2:30pm (or something like that). It is about 10:30am at this time. I start to get annoyed, I don’t even know what the registered post package is, I can’t think of what could be so important but I need to get it. I leave a terse message and hope they will call me back.
I decided that I may as well go to the Surry Hills post office as it’s on my way back home, on the off chance that the parcel would be there (and the closest post office to my home). So I queue up in the Surry Hills post office (now remember what I said about post offices before Christmas last year?) I give my special card to a woman at the counter. She looks around a bit & says she can’t find it there, but has tracked it to a “sorting” centre in Waterloo. I’m getting really annoyed now because I got the card on Thursday and it’s now Monday.
Luckily, the Honka Princess had given me a call earlier, so we met up for lunch at Cafe Zoe. We did a bit of shopping in Newtown & Alexandria for a while until I finally got a call back from Australia Post (about 20 minutes after they said they would call). They told me that my package arrived at the Strawberry Hills office at 11am. Argh!!! So Honka Princess kindly drives me back to Strawberry Hills and I finally get my Registered Post parcel. Guess what it was….
My tickets for Sydney Festival ( I forgot they would be sending them to me). I also received a compilation CD of artists performaing at Sydney Festival next year, so that was nice.
So that was my Australia Post semi-long-winded drama.

On Saturday night, I finally got to see the ego himself Kanye West in concert. I have been a fan of his production work for Jay-Z, John Legend, Alicia Keys etc etc as well as his solo releases. He has great showmanship and style. He’s performed in Australia quite a few times, there was the one at the Sydney Opera House with the symphony, Good Vibrations etc but when the Glow in the Dark tour of Australia was announced, I decided Kanye was going to happen for me finally. I bought a ticket for my bro for Xmas, Honka Princess and Dave (with paintball injuries) came along too.
Unfortunately, we missed Scribe, I had seen him before supporting the Beastie Boys. Next up was Nas (it was his first time in Oz, there seemed like a lot of people who were there for him). He did a really great set with some crazy backing musicians especially the guitarists. I couldn’t work out if they were male or female. Nas reminds me of Jay-Z a bit.
Then it was time for the big man, I noticed there was no hype/MC action which you usually get at hip-hop gigs, he just suddenly appeared. To be honest, I thought it was going to be better than it was. I think I had seen snippets from other performances Kanye has done this year and thought I was getting a huge spectacular, which it wasn’t. I was also surprised to see that the top section of Acer Arena was not used. (unlike Stevie Wonder, oops forgot to blog about that). When he did his old stuff, it was great, there are many great tracks (Heard ‘Em Say, Gold Digger, Diamonds from Sierra Leone, Jesus Walks, Flashing Lights, the one with Chris Martin from Coldplay). When he did his well know stuff everyone had their hands in the air! The young Asians in front were screaming and videoing everything, the posse of boys behind were dancing and whooping! For me, the best songs were Through the Wire, Touch the Sky, Stronger and Good Life. When he did his new stuff from 808s and Heartbreak he started to waffle on (in auto tune) in the middle of the songs, there was a part where he was talking about Britney and why people were hammering him for not sticking to rapping. Well, I think he should stick with rapping, producing records and not singing. Kanye, you’re no Marvin Gaye or even Lionel Richie (though the hair is coming close). Overall I had a good time seeing Kanye in concert but was disappointed that he didn’t actually glow in the dark!
